In our ongoing exploration of "Fair Share," we've examined the fundamental role of labor and capital in economic activity. Now, we turn our attention to the core elements that drive the creation of goods and services within a for-profit company: the factors of production. While mainstream economics often presents a more nuanced and extensive list, for the purposes of this discussion, and to establish a clearer framework for exploring fair profit distribution, we propose a simplified three-factor model: labor, capital, and management.
This three-factor model is not meant to ignore the complexity of economic systems but to provide a clear, actionable framework for discussing the distribution of profits within a for-profit company. It allows us to focus on the key contributors to the production process and to explore how their contributions should be recognized through a fair allocation of profits. We will bring back the other aspects, such as unpaid labor, as we develop the various arguments and the other sections of this project.
Definition: Labor refers to the human effort—physical, mental, and emotional—that goes into the production process.
Scope: This encompasses all individuals who contribute their time, skills, and energy to the company, regardless of their specific role, and includes both manual and intellectual contributions, from the shop floor to the executive suite.
Significance: Labor is the fundamental driver of all production. It's the active force that transforms raw materials into valuable goods and services.
Note: For the purposes of this discussion, our focus will be on paid labor within the constituted for-profit company. While we acknowledge the crucial role of unpaid labor in the broader economy (including housework, care work, and other forms of domestic labor), this will be addressed in subsequent stages of the project.
Definition: Capital is a consolidated category encompassing all the resources used to produce goods and services, as well as the costs associated with the use of land and natural resources. It primarily embodies past labor.
Scope: This includes physical assets like machinery, equipment, buildings, technology, and tools, financial investments, intellectual property rights, and importantly, the expenses incurred for using natural resources and land, including associated taxes.
Rationale: We consolidate land and natural resource use into the capital outlay because the company rents land and pays taxes for its consumption of natural resources. Land and natural resources should not be simply appropriated, but their usage must incur a cost. This cost must be measured through an effective and fair organic tax framework.
Past Labor: It is also crucial to recognize that capital is largely an embodiment of past labor – the tools, machinery, and technologies are all products of human effort from previous generations.
Pigouvian and Organic Tax Framework: By including the costs of using natural resources as part of capital, we set the stage for a Pigouvian and Organic tax framework that aims to discourage pollution and the overexploitation of natural resources through a "cradle-to-grave" approach. This allows the tax framework to better integrate with the profit-sharing mechanism.
